Christmas comes but once a year and during that time we tend to let ourselves drink excessively, eat unhealthily and gain a few extra pounds. Many believe you can’t stay fit during the holidays as they do not have enough time to perform their regular workouts, but the overindulging in food and drink is undoubtedly the main cause for our additional festive weight gain. 

For many, the festive period is a month full of parties, pigs in blankets and late nights. Contrary to belief, you can still enjoy all the festivities of the season and get through Christmas without too much impact on your health and your waistline.  If you want to stay fit during the holidays, especially during Christmas and the New Year’s Eve, here are seven useful tips that will help you:

1. Eat In Before You Go Out

Have a healthy meal before visiting family and friends. By eating beforehand you will not be tempted to eat a lot or overindulge yourself. Do not fall into the trap of thinking that skipping out on breakfast will make up for yesterday’s excessive intake. Don’t do it, because it will only lead to counterproductive results.

2. Don’t Be Too Hard On Yourself

‘Tis the season to be jolly’ you are supposed to have fun and relax. Wanting to stay fit during the holidays doesn’t mean the end of the world if you have an extra potato or one more glass of eggnog, just try to keep a sense of proportion. Remember, these are just a few days out of 365 and it isn’t worth stressing over and shouldn’t knock you off your course in the long run.

3. Eat A Ton Of Greens

I know you’ve been looking forward to the taste of the turkey, mince pies, ham and GREENS! Yes, I said greens because if there is one food you have a licence to overindulge in, it’s the vegetables. With the potential of late nights and big drinking sessions, you will feel run down and lethargic. As a result, it will weaken your immune system and lead to illness, so the vitamins and nutrients from your veggies are more important than ever.

4. Portion Control

Let it snow but don’t Let your belly grow. Yes, it’s Christmas but that doesn’t mean eating a mountain of food. Don’t have two massive meals, spread this out during the day and have five small meals. This will also stop you from going up for second helpings! 

5. Don’t Sit Down All Day

Christmas is one of the best times for TV, all of our favourite specials are on. For many that leads to the family gathering around the screen all day and distracted snacking. A Harvard study has proven that distracted eating – eating while watching television hurried eating can prompt you to eat more and put on weight.

Engage your brain Instead of switching off in front of the TV, keep your mind active by playing games like monopoly, trivial pursuit or heads up. This is also a great way of getting everyone together.

Also, encourage the whole family to get up and be active. Go out for a walk at some point, walking after dinner is great for digestion. Put the outdoor Christmas presents to immediate use, like the bikes, footballs and scooters. 

6. Make The Most Out Of Your Workout

Making the most out of festive parties doesn’t mean neglecting your workouts. If you want to stay fit during the holidays, exercise should still be on your priority list even if it’s knocked down a few pegs. Set realistic exercise objectives, completing a 20 min HIIT session per day will have you feeling happy and energised. Planning a one hour or more workout and not achieve it, you will only end up defeated.

7. Drink More Water

A great way to stay fit during the holidays is to stay hydrated. Whatever your usual daily consumption of water is, double it! We all know the benefits of drinking water are but in particular, during the Christmas period, you may find yourself a little worse for wear, after all the parties and festive get-togethers. Drinking water will help with any hangovers, digestion and recovering.
